GAP Trail Clearing with Gorge View
A bright clearing in the forest canopy is a welcome sight a considerable distance between Connellsville and Ohiopyle along the Great Allegheny Passage Trail and provides a scenic view of the Youghiogheny River and its gorge from a distance. The whole scene takes on a garden like appearance with a series of wild flowers on either side of the trail and large rocks along with a decorative looking retaining wall. The river far below can be seen in the distance twisting through the river gorge that may not be as deep as it is to the south and north from this location but still impresses. A bench is provided looking southeast towards the river scene though some people find the large rocks are adequate for sitting. For the trail riders this is a milestone on their quest to reach either Connellsville or Ohiopyle and you'll often find people here taking a break during good weather.
A trail leads down to the river but is quite steep and can at times be grown in producing cover for snakes but rewards with an up close view of a sandy beach and river rapids.
The clearing isn't natural but was the product of a gas line. Vegetation can be grown in at times in between maintenance leading to reduced visibility of the river scenery.
Caution
Trail users have warned me about the presence of snakes in this area and take caution if climbing down to the river from this location.
